Clayton people have made an impact in Romania in several ways.
In 2003 a team of twelve people, five adults and seven teenagers went to Romania
to work with our partners in Oradea to run a children's holiday camp.
For nearly a year we raised money to pay for our travel,
our accomodation, our materials a group of interpreters and
to pay the cost of FIFTY children from poor villages.
The children had a great time - but the biggest impact was on the young people from Clayton.
Each had an experience which will stay with them for life and will affect their priorities forever.
Romania
In 2005 a team of nine adults went to work with our partners in Romania on a renovation project
in the Oradea Children's Hospital.
We spent one week renovating two treatment rooms and a side bay on the children's cancer ward.
We sanded walls and ceilings, tiled floors, replaced porcelain and painted walls and woodwork.
We replaced windows, decorated windows, acted as clowns, organised crafts and made friends with the children
parents and staff.
Then we visited the abandoned babies!!!!
Our hearts were broken. These children lay in their cots with no-one to talk to them,
no-one to play with them, no-one to show them any love.
They had only one nappy a day - the ward was hot and smelly.
We came back with a determination to change the life prospects for these children.
We committed ourselves there and then to raise £70 a month for twelve months to buy nappies
and bedside furniture for the ward.
So far we have sent £2700 in only 16 months. That has more than provided nappies.
It has also paid for vitamins and helped towards Romanian workers to spend time in the ward nursing the babies.
When we told the story at home Ruth McAvan responded instantly by deciding to go
from Clayton to Oradea and take a gap year working with the babies.
She nursed them, talked with them and gave them the love and attention
that all babies need to thrive.
You can Make an Impact.
We work with partners who work on the hospital wards,
provide foster care so the children can have improved care and work with young women so
that they don't reach the point of abandoning their child.
We collect maternity clothes, clothes for young women, non-bio washing liquid (Not powder or tablets)
and send them out to them.
Our next team will be going to Romania in Summer 2008. Maybe you can make your next holiday one that makes an impact.
If you would like to be involved phone David on 01274 882123 to talk about what you can do.
You can contribute to our nappy fund.
£2 buys a weeks worth of nappies for a child.
£40 employs a Romanian worker for a month.
